kurinuki
Lurinuki, a Japanese tradition, is the practice where a vessel is carved out of a solid block of clay, creating the inside and outside by refuction using a knife or other sharp tool. Sand, slip or other ways to introduce texture are used to create the interior/exterior dialogue. The beauty is in the contrast between the smooth refinement of the interior counterpointing the deeply textured randomness of the exterior. Glazes, textures, mineral pigments and engobes further add to the story of each piece.
